Shifting Sands, Tanzania

in Landscape Chronicles
Reading Time: 3 mins read

Hi folks! Do you know that I once crawled along the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania to reach a fascinating location called Shifting Sands? Intrigued? Let me take you on one of my most interesting journeys around Olduvai Gorge, a place often referred to as the Cradle of Humankind. It’s not just any gorge—it’s an archaeological paradise, one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world, offering priceless insights into early human evolution. Fossils here document human biological and technological development spanning over 2 million years!

Now, here’s a fun fact for you: the true Maasai name of Olduvai is actually “Oldupai,” named after the East African wild sisal native to this region. The gorge itself cuts deep into ancient lakebed sediments, up to 90 meters down. A side gorge traces the shoreline of a prehistoric lake, teeming with fossils and early hominin sites. While many come to Olduvai as a break from the wildlife safaris of Serengeti, I ventured deeper, in search of something more unusual—the mysterious Shifting Sands.

This remarkable black magnetic sand dune stretches 100 meters along its curves and rises about 5 meters high. The sands are constantly on the move, propelled by the wind, and they lie about 12 kilometres northwest of the Olduvai Museum, just 2 kilometres from the gorge’s bank—though, here’s the twist! Each year, these sands drift 15 to 22 meters further away! Local Maasai believe that the Shifting Sands have a divine origin, born from the sacred Ol Doinyo Lengai, their revered “Mountain of God.”

As I approached, an eerie, mystical feeling washed over me. There it was, a solitary, isolated dune in the vast plains, leaving a path of barren earth in its wake while grass grew elsewhere. It’s as though nature had carved a clear, winding trail just for this moving marvel. Out of nowhere, as if by magic, an elderly Maasai woman appeared. She came quietly, carrying with her vibrant bead necklaces and trinkets, making the moment feel even more magical. Her presence, so sudden and so serene, added to the enchantment of the day. So, what do you think? Quite the journey for an octopus, right?
