Serengeti here I come. A Serengeti safari to the Mara River is one of Africa’s most awe-inspiring wildlife experiences, and I decided to make it happen. From Dar es Salaam, I flew with Air Tanzania to Arusha, where my guide-cum-driver, Freddie, picked me up for a drive to Karatu. Despite traffic stretching the usual 2.5-hour journey to 3 hours, we reached Peak Hotel for the night. The next morning, we headed through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Central Serengeti, stopping at the gate to pay fees before continuing our journey.
The Serengeti offers breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and the chance to witness the Great Migration. My goal was to catch the migration at the Mara River in the north. The Great Migration involves over 1.5 million wildebeests, accompanied by nearly 200,000 zebras, gazelles, and other herbivores in a mass movement across the African savanna, traveling through Tanzania and Kenya in search of fresh grazing lands and water. Contrary to popular belief fuelled by TV channels and travel bloggers that Great Migration is all about Mara River crossing, it is a year-round cycle, with calving in the southern Serengeti from January to March, movement toward the western Serengeti and Grumeti River between April and June searching for food and water, and the crocodile infested famed Mara River crossings from July to October. By November and December, the herds return south as rains rejuvenate the plains. Timing your visit based on the migration phase is crucial to selecting the best Serengeti destination.
Arriving at my North Serengeti tent camp after a scenic game drive, I enjoyed a hearty dinner before bed. Exhausted, I accidentally left my tent’s outer layer unzipped and the toilet light on. In the middle of the night, curious Wildebeests visited, knocking over my camp chair and table before fleeing at the noise. Just before dawn, a zebra herd arrived, and one began whinnying loudly. Half-asleep, I mistook the sound for hyenas before drifting off again. Morning brought the realization that I’d left my tent unsecured—thankfully, only herbivores had visited!
Beyond the migration, the Mara River region offers year-round wildlife activity and exceptional game viewing. A Serengeti safari is more than a trip—it’s a profound encounter with nature’s raw power and beauty, creating memories that last a lifetime.
